Keep Your Secrets

A king once imparted one of his important secrets to his close aide adding, “Tell it not to anyone.” For a long time they kept secret in their hearts but one day king found his secret had become talk of the town. The king ordered execution of his close aide as punishment for divulging his secret. An adviser begged for mercy, saying: “Kill not your aide, for the fault was yours. You could not dam up your secret when it was a spring: why seek to arrest its course now when it has become a flood?

Entrust jewels to treasurers, but be the keeper of your own secrets. You have the power until the secrets are kept to the heart.

Speech is a demon confined in the well of the mind; leave it not free on your palate and tongue. When the genie has escaped from the cage, no stratagem will bring him back.
